The heart of Eugene, Oregon is bounded by Skinner’s Butte to the north and Spencer’s Butte to the south. What’s a butte, you ask? It’s a hill of modest height. Of the two, Spencer’s is the higher and steeper.
it seems like almost from the day we arrived in Eugene in the early Sixties, I was climbing “the butte” with my friends, classmates, scout troops, girlfriends, and a lot of total strangers. It’s a popular spot.
i hadn’t been there for years. I remember scrambling up the impossibly long, impossibly steep trail as a ten-year-old. I remember climbing by flashlight in the middle of the night for no particular reason as a high schooler.
Today, I was back as an aged geezer, glad to see that a new, easier path has been added.
There’s not a lot to be said about the photos; just four old friends getting some post-Thanksgiving exercise on a beautiful Fall afternoon.
